It was difficult this time, deciding how to categorize images for presentation. Most of my photography of people is concept-based, and often it's fairly abstract. This type of work doesn't fit easily into tightly defined boxes.

Portraiture is perhaps a generic enough framework to encompass almost anything that's about the person. It also allows me to show a range of work, diverse in gender and age and personality. The earliest images had their genesis in documentary work, while most of the more recent ones involved more formal sittings, whether in the studio or on location.

If the images have anything in common, it's that they are of people I found to be interesting in some way. Initially, I simply recorded what was in front of my lens. In the more recent work, the images of the past three or four years, I'm more likely to have practiced the advice offered by my friend Miranda.. to have "gotten inside their heads and crawled around in there a while" (which I promptly practiced on her). It's remarkably easy to provoke emotion with a bit of practice. Indeed, I've found some fascinating things inside some of those minds.

I'm currently working on some new portraits, as well as resurrecting old ones. The images shown here span 27 years, and they represent only a small fraction of the interesting individuals I've met during that time. Additional images will be added as time permits.
