about the photographer
At it's core, my work is about culture... as James Boulton said in describing the early writings of Edmund Burke, "the opportunity given to an observant (person) to analyse human nature." I've long been interested in philosophy, sociology; so I see as a photojournalist, a street photographer, or a philosopher; not as a fashion photographer. As a result there's little danger that my work will look like everybody else's. My images usually mean more in the context of a series than as individual photographs, and sometimes they require a little effort from the viewer -- My work is not aimed at everyone. Rather, I seek to reach a smaller but more thoughtful audience.
I began as a photojournalist, first for the mainstream press and later as a writer and photographer for a music 'zine. Although I rarely accept commercial work today, my style continues to be influenced by those early experiences. I document the world around me, whether an inside look at a counterculture or a tour of the backroads of America.
I've exhibited at venues such as Echo Gallery, Steppenwolf Theatre, and nearly 30 others since 1998. My images have been published in the U.S., Canada, Italy, Australia, and Thailand. I started as a photojournalist, first for the mainstream press and later covering music for one of the early punk 'zines. Currently I reside on the rugged northern California coast, and spend about 30 percent of my time in Chicago.
current projects:
Photography is my safety valve, something I do in my spare time to balance other aspects of my life. Thus, the amount of time spent on photo projects varies depending what else is happening at the time.
At present (fall '07) I'm in transition, spending more time printing existing work and updating my web presence. I'm pausing to re-evaluate concepts and decide where to go next. I'm not aggressively seeking models at this time, but rather am continuing to work mostly with a few people who I already know well.
writings:
Ephemeral Creation, my 1978-1983 punk memoirs.
